For SharePoint 2010 there is changes in default web.config file so there is no httpHandlers section any more so my previous post is no more relevant but the idea is the same. Then opening a document from SharePoint Office makes a request to the IIS site using the “OPTIONS” verb which requires authentication and prompts the user. Blocking the IIS verb prevents client integration, which is also why the “open in explorer” button doesn't work. Another request made to IIS is for use with WebDAV, the “PRORFIND” verb finds file properties. Blocking this verb prevents office from getting the file properties. To block OPTIONS and PRORFIND verbs you can add this code snipped in web.config
